WINTERSONG – dances for a sacred season
celebrating thirty-one years of illuminating the solstice through dance
WINTERSONG warms the hearts of family audiences with a breathtaking tapestry of seasonal dance inspired by the world’s rich solstice traditions. A world premiere by Dora Award-winning choreographer Hanna Kiel highlights the program, set to an original score by Greg Harrison and Frances Miller. Also featured are the return of Against the Dark by Colin Connor (Artistic Director, Limón Dance Company), Sylvie Bouchard’s exquisite Petits rêves, Apolonia Velasquez’s hyper-kinetic contemporary street dance fusion UNHUSH, and Carol Anderson’s signature creation for the mid-winter season, Nowell Sing We.
"...a thoroughly refreshing take on the season" – The Toronto Star
"...simply breathtaking" – Dance International
"What all the works share is substance and artistic integrity" – Dance Current
Canadian Contemporary Dance Theatre is a repertory company launched in 1980 by Artistic Director Deborah Lundmark and Managing Director Michael deConinck Smith. Today, CCDT’s audiences enjoy creations by such dance luminaries as Canada’s Santee Smith, David Earle, Carol Anderson, Danny Grossman, Apolonia Velasquez, Belinda McGuire, Tedd Robinson and Hanna Kiel; America’s Colin Connor, Jennifer Archibald, Kevin Wynn, José Limón and Sidra Bell; Germany’s Roderick George and the UK’s Alexander Whitley. Presentation highlights include appearances at Toronto’s Princess of Wales and Royal Alexandra Theatres and five invitations to the Canada Dance Festival. As a pioneering dance touring company, CCDT has introduced an audience of more than 400,000 to dance through its Ontario Arts Access program and undertaken national tours spanning Vancouver to Quebec City. Farther afield, the Company has performed in Singapore, Malaysia, China and Scotland. Culminating a three-decade relationship with the José Limón Dance Company, CCDT performed to standing ovations at New York City’s storied Joyce Theater as part of its sister company’s historic 70th anniversary International Dance Festival. In 2018 CCDT was featured in Harbourfront Centre’s inaugural Junior International Festival and at Fall for Dance North, Canada’s premiere international dance festival.
