You don’t want to miss this Afrodiasporic cultural mash-up as they celebrate their 5th annual “Caribana” weekend in the city where it all started.
Founded in 2015 by Wan and Chi, Gumbo is an art-infused dance party that reflects their multicultural roots in West Africa and the West Indies. Island Soul Daytime Lime brings the festive energy of the infamous Gumbo parties to Harbourfront with music, art and dance. They have curated a vibrant cast of collaborators: Brooklyn-based visual artist Mz. Icar will be creating a live mixed-media art piece while French-Guadeloupean performer Nadia Sorel explores Brazilian and Caribbean dance styles with a demonstration and a beginner class.
The music will run the gamut from Soca and Dancehall to Afrobeats and Kompa. The transnational DJ Line up includes DJ Crown Prince (Dubai via Antigua), DJ Donet (Toronto via Ghana), Deemaks (Toronto/Calgary via Lagos,Nigeria) and Sweet La Rock (Montreal via Haiti). Through international collaborations with Afropunk and Everyday People (NYC) and Ancestral (Belgium), Gumbo keeps connecting the diaspora through music.
