Artistic Director’s Statement
"I am compelled to deepen my way of being in the world that is committed to the excavation of the human psyche in its functioning and its flaws and to creation through an intuitive thinking process. Lucid and austere conditions inspire me to celebrate the unusual, to chase a throbbing heart, to hear the pulse of its voice and to stretch moments of human sanity to a new fate, twisting its expression through the body’s articulate vessel at any moment in time. My life as an artist keeps me knocking at this magical door.

We bring to the stage in this shared programme by its Artistic Directors, four new works that express an artistic pursuit of lively and personal dances that are inspired by being human, our idiosyncratic flaws, relationships and love."

Graceful and extreme kinetics identify Kaeja d’Dance in themes of love and personal identity for 20/20 Vision. Local luminaries Allen & Karen Kaeja share a programme of four new intimate works on this 20th anniversary "future-spective" programme.

With over a decade of award-winning dance film under his belt, Allen's Armour/Amour features the liquid eyes of the camera to lay bare the multifaceted, beautifully raw architecture of the self and is created with life partner and Dora Nominee Karen Kaeja along with gifted dancer Mairéad Filgate, Allen Kaeja (live camera), Elysha Poirier (live video), and Edgardo Moreno (composer).

The full programme includes an exhilarating cast of Canadian and international dance artists in two premieres each by Karen and Allen including an explosive commission from Ut i Scenekunsten (Norway), a quirky and quick-fire solo of simplicity and a deeply moving and intense duet.

"Hard-hitting physicality and lyrical grace."
