Kalinda Stick Fight Performance & Workshop
Calypso singing as an artform originally derived from kalinda chants sung in the gayelle (stick fighting arena) to charge up the stick fighters in duel. The kalinda (stick fight), like capoeira, is an African martial art, a folk music of drum riddims, and a dance of nimble foot movements. These were brought to Trinidad by West African slaves during the 18th century. Watch the performance, join in singing the lavweys (songs) to cheer on the stick fighters, and learn the basics to compete in your own stick fight at the Island Soul gayelle, with the drummers and dancers of the Keith Pascall Performing Company!
