Klorofyl: Urban Contemporary Dance (Trailer)

About the company:
Gadfly focuses on studying, researching and creating movement at the junction where urban dance styles (house dancing, hip hop, b-boying) and other praised genres (jazz, contemporary) collide and tune together. Ofilio Portillo and Apolonia Velasquez, artistic directors, merge art with entertainment in contemporary urban dancing, which breathes with a spontaneity found only in urban dance culture. Don’t settle for less than what you truly are worth; dare to question the established standards and innovate.

Plants have this incredible ability to synthesize light into energy. As humans, we need to generate passion to feel alive, but we depend on each other for that. Inspired by the 1954 film Seven Samurais, the company looks closer at “zokus” (a Japanese term meaning “tribes” or “families”) and finds that communal relations become passion boosters by satisfying our six primal human needs (certainty/comfort, variety, significance, connection/love, growth, contribution). Klorofyl is the rebirth of seven fallen warriors that, when united for something noble and greater than them, aspire to find that lost flame again.

Presented in association with Harbourfront Centre.

"Extraordinary choreography... It's terrifically exciting to see street dance liberated from the robotics of music videos and imbued with emotional expression." − Christopher Hoile, EYE Weekly
