Steve Jolin, aka Anodajay, came into the world on the 7th day of the 7th month of 1977. Although a child of Abitibi-Témiscamingue, it was on the other side of the border, in Ontario, that, as a boy of 12, he first appeared on stage. A few years later, Steve Jolin became Anodajay, Abitibi’s first rapper. In 2003, Anodajay released his first album, Premier VII. At the same time, he founded Les Disques 7ième Ciel, an appealing and engaging label that was to introduce to Quebec some of the most influential stage performers: Samian, Koriass and Dramatik.
In June 2006, Anodajay released his second album Septentrion, also warmly received by the critics. Henceforth known as the “rapper of the woods”, he included his adaptation of the great Quebec classic "La bitt-à-tibi," which he modified to "Le Beat à Ti-bi." This piece took over the province’s radio and video shows, as well as its small screens. In 2007, Anodajay organized the HHD, Hip-Hop Dépendant event in Montréal, which drew some of the top Quebec hip hop artists to the Club Soda stage. Acclaimed by audiences, the media and the industry, the HHD would become known as the most ambitious hip hop show ever presented in Quebec, and its producer as a seasoned businessman and rapper.
In 2010, for the celebration of the seventh anniversary of the prolific 7ième Ciel, on the Francofolies de Montréal and the Festival de musique émergente d’Abitibi-Témiscamingue stages, Anodajay updated the 7th album of 7ième Ciel, ET7ERA. The album was nominated in the fall of 2011 for the Félix award for best hip hop album of the year at ADISQ’s L’Autre Gala, where Anodajay was asked to perform. But he left empty-handed, as fellow rapper Samian walked away with the award that earned Disques 7ième Ciel its very first Félix, nothing short of a consecration for the independent label and its founder.
Originally from Pikogan, a small Aboriginal community in Abitibi-Témiscamingue, Samian made his reputation proudly wielding his colours, those of an entire nation of so-called “invisible” people, whom he describes as “invincible”, and for whom he demands respect and recognition. Inspired by the authenticity of his words and fascinated by his musical universe, where urban rhythms blend with Algonquin and traditional American Indian instruments, Samian’s young followers keep calling for more and more of his presence, which he is wholeheartedly committed to delivering.
Discovered through the Wapikoni Mobile project, a travelling studio for audiovisual and musical training and creation, Samian’s talent was revealed to the world in 2004 when through that initiative he took part in several cultural events in Quebec and France.
In 2006, Samian met Anodajay, founder of Disques 7ième Ciel. Their meeting led to a collaboration that sparked the production of a first album. Face à soi-même was released in November 2007 to enthusiastic public and media acclaim. Over the next two years, Samian was in great demand at, among other things, the Montreal International Jazz Festival, FrancoFolies de Montréal and Quebec City’s 400th anniversary celebrations. His second album, Face à la musique, was released in 2010; both the album and its stage adaptation became hits. The record earned the Félix award for best hip hop album of the year at L’Autre Gala in 2011, and was nominated for one of the industry’s most prized categories, that of author and composer of the year.
