About Tio Chorinho:
Tio Chorinho is a new Toronto ensemble dedicated to performing Brazilian choro music in the tradition of the great mandolin master, Jacob do Bandolim. The group formed during the spring of 2009 and has developed an impressive repertoire of familiar choro classics by such composers as Pixinguinha, Ernesto Nazareth, Waldyr Azavedo, and of course Jacob do Bandolim.
Choro (pronounced SHOH-roh) is a primarily instrumental musical form which originated in Rio de Janeiro in the mid-19th century. It is best described as “the New Orleans jazz of Brazil.” It is a complex popular musical form based on improvisation, and like New Orleans jazz, blues, or ragtime, grew from a formalized musical structure and many worldly influences.
The group features some of Toronto’s leading world and roots musicians, including mandolinist Eric Stein (Beyond the Pale), seven-string guitarist Avital Zemer (King Sunshine), percussionist Maninho Costa (Batucada Carioca), mandolinist Joel Schwartz (The Outlanders) and a number of regular guest collaborators.
