Embracing East European Jewish traditions – from searing klezmer instrumentals to heartfelt Yiddish folk and theatre tunes – while also pushing the boundaries with their own original compositions and innovative arrangements, the music of Finjan reflects a combination of virtuosity, soul, wit and inventiveness. While much of the early activity of what became known as the Klezmer Revival centered in the USA, the founding of Finjan in Winnipeg in 1982 marked the official arrival of this musical movement in Canada. Finjan provided thousands of Canadians, with their first klezmer and Yiddish music experiences, and their work paved the way for the creation of other successful Canadian klezmer groups. Their illustrious career has included five award-winning albums, extensive touring in the North American folk, jazz and Jewish music scenes, national television appearances on PBS and performances as guest artists with major symphony orchestras. Largely inactive over the last decade, Finjan’s reunion at the Ashkenaz Festival marks their first performance together since 2005.
