Dione Joseph and Michelle St. John
Dione Joseph is a theater director and writer with an academic and performance background in community and cultural development. She has developed an ethical and political aesthetic based on her own diverse background and through experience working at local, national and international levels. Till date Dione has directed theatre in New Zealand, the USA and Australia; written extensively as a reviewer and journalist for Australian Stage and has devoted the last five years to exploring the development of contemporary Indigenous theatre in Australia within academic and artistic frames. She has recently completed her Masters in Community and Cultural Development at the Victorian College of the Arts, Melbourne, Australia; and is currently Assistant Director to Scott Rankin on Big hART's latest project Yijala Yala which will premiere in Canberra, 2013.
In 2012 Dione was awarded a place at the DirectorsLab Chicago and in September this year she will be based in mainland China for three weeks as an Artist-in-Residence in a community close to the rapidly developing Industrial Park in Zhejiang. She will also be presenting her own research at the IUGTE theatre conference in Austria in December and working with different theatre companies over two months before returning home to Australia in February. Dione is also currently developing a large scale Indigenous led and Indigenous driven film that explores the contemporary models of artistic expression and merit amongst Indigenous theatre companies today. In her spare time she is working on the biographies of two Indigenous Elders based in Victoria, Australia.
