About Arkady Gendler:

Bessarabian-born Arkady Gendler (born 1921) is one of the greatest living treasures of Yiddish song, language and culture. Gendler was born in the town of Soroca (Bessarabia) in 1921, the 10th child in a family where everyone spoke and sang in Yiddish. He lost almost his entire family and many of his friends in the Holocaust, but never stopped singing, writing and teaching in Yiddish. Later in his life, Gendler began composing and wrote a number of songs of exceptional musical and poetic quality. Many of these songs have never been recorded or performed in public. In fall 2011, German clarinetist Christian Dawid (Konsonans Retro, The Other Europeans) launched a project to collect, document, and eventually record Gendler’s work. Arranging these compositions for voice and a small chamber ensemble, Dawid recorded with Gendler last October in Vienna. This special tribute and CD release concert at Ashkenaz marks the completion of a year-long project, and will feature three remarkable young voices in Yiddish song, Josh Dolgin, Sarah Gordon and Kyra Folk-Farber, paying tribute to one of the form’s great mentors with their very personal renditions of his writings. Also featuring Marilyn Lerner (piano), Aleksandar Gajic (viola), Sergei Nikonov (violin), Olga Laktionova (cello), Dejan Badnjar (accordion) and Ben Holmes (trumpet).
