Art of Time Ensemble: The Big Band Show
The Big Band Show is a rare chance to experience the power and beauty of a full, 26-piece big band in an extraordinary range of music written for the genre. Art of Time regulars John Johnson, Rob Piltch, Andrew Downing, Davide Di Renzo, jazz giants Mike Murley and Al Kay and a who’s who of Canadian jazz perform Duke Ellington’s 1960 Nutcracker Suite.
Virtuoso classical clarinetist James Campbell joins the big band to feature in Stravinsky’s Ebony Concerto, commissioned by the American bandleader Woody Herman in 1945. Rounding out the slate is Shostakovich’s Jazz Suite No. 1, representing American big band jazz as filtered through the creative mind of one of the greatest classical composers of the 20th century. Conducted by Andrew Burashko, the stellar lineup of musicians also includes Andy Ballantyne, Perry White, Peter Lutek, Alex Kundakcioglu, Sandy Barter, Don Rooke, Ryan Scott and Erica Goodman.
